Treatment -
Active Surveillance
Once you are diagnosed with prostate cancer, your doctor will recommend
several treatment options for your according to your unique situation.
However, this recommendation may vary depending of what type of doctor
you are seeing. With prostate cancer, there are three types of
specialist - a radiation oncologist, a medical oncologist and a
urologist. You may seek a second or third opinion form all of these
specialists to get an all round picture of your options.
Active Surveillance
Increasingly, patients are adopting a 'wait and see' method rather than
going on immediate treatment for prostate cancer. This applies for men
with other disorder such as diabetes or high blood pressure that
weakened their body, making it hard for them to tolerate the taxing
effects of prostate cancer treatments.
Patient is monitored for cancer growth progress through PSA blood test
and DRE test every six month and a biopsy every year. Once cancer
growth is detected, treatments will be recommended. This method is
usually adopted by people with very slow growing cancer or early stage
cancer but are not currently fit to withstand treatments.
